Weekend Trip: Three Days In Prague

It is possible to visit all the sites of Prague in one to two days depending on how much you enjoy walking. Two nights or three days allows you enough time to visit all the main sites and soak up some Czech culture and is enough time to tick Prague off your bucket list.

Day 1: Wenceslas Square – National Museum – The Pilsner Experience – Franz Kafka Head – Dancing House – River Cruise

National Museum
Boat Cruise

Depending on when you arrive in Prague, whether at the train station or the airport and where you stay, you can kick start your site-seeing straight away.

Start your trip by visiting Wenceslas Square and admiring the national museum. If you catch the metro, get off at Mustek and go for a stroll down the street surrounded by shops and restaurants making your way to the national museum. The Museum is worth visiting but be prepared to spend multiple hours going through the entire complex.

From the museum, you can walk 10 minutes to The Pilsner Experience. This tour gives you an insight into the history of beer, how it has changed throughout the years, and why it is such an important part of Czech culture. You will smell, touch and taste your way through this experience and end in a beer hall where you can redeem your two included beers or soft drinks and pay for lunch.

TIP: If you have time we recommend taking a one-hour bus from Prague to Plzen to tour the original brewery and underground systems where all the famous Pilsner Urquell is still made today. See here for more information Weekend Trip: Three Days in Pilsen.

For some lunch ideas see our Lunch Spots in Prague Post.

After understanding the beer culture at The Pilsner Experience, take a 5-minute walk to visit the Rotating Kafka Head (it rotates on the hour for 15 minutes). If you have time, then make your way to admire the architecture of the Dancing House (a 15-minute walk from Kafka Head).

End your day going for a dinner cruise with Prague Boats on the Vltava River, going under the Charles Bridge and seeing Prague Castle on the hill. For other dinner ideas SEE here.

Day 2: Powder Tower Old Town Square – Charles Bridge – Prague Castle

Old Town Square

From there make the 5-10 minute walk to Old Town Square where you can see the famous astronomical clock (try getting there on the hour so you can see the elaborate mechanics of the clock as it strikes the hour).

For some lunch ideas see our Lunch Spots in Prague Post.

From there you can take a 10-minute stroll to Charles Bridge and make your way across to the other side, taking in views of Prague Castle and the National Theatre. You can also climb the 138 steps of Old Town Bridge Tower which offers unique views of the bridge and across to river to the castle.

From Charles Bridge, you can slowly make your way up to Prague Castle which will take around 15-20 minutes, but be warned it is all uphill.

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world and complex is a massive 70,000 square meters. Saint Vitus Cathedral is the most famous of the sites within the complex but it is also worth visiting the Golden Lane which in the 16th century alchemists lived and provides an insight into the way people used to live, Franz Kafka the famous author also lived on this street in house 22.

The other sites worth visiting are Saint Geoeges Basilica dating back to 920, the Old Royal Palace dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries, and climbing the 287 steps of the South Tower of St Vitus Cathedral for views of the city and the Cathedral from above.

Day 3: Petrin Tower – Lennon Wall – Kampa Park OR Vysehrad

If you have time and are up for a walk, over the bridge you can go for a morning walk through Kampa Park viewing the odd artwork throughout the park and passing the Lennon Wall to view artist graffiti honouring the late musician. After this make your way to the top of Petrin Tower, either by funicular or making the 30-minute uphill walk from Charles Bridge, or the 25-minute walk from Kampa Park. To reach the peak of Petrin Tower, a tower resembling the Eiffel Tower, built in 1891 and once used as an observation and transmission tower, you will need to climb 299 steps.

For some lunch ideas see our Lunch Spots in Prague Post.

An alternative to this is to visit Vysehrad, a historic settlement founded in the 10th century offering a beautiful park, a castle, fortifications and a unique view over Prague. The area is around a 45-minute walk from central Prague or you can catch a number of trams there depending on preference.
